This robotic picking and packing demonstration cell developed by FANUC Robotics features the FANUC M-1iA/0.5S four-axis "Genkotsu" robot. This parallel-link robot model is equipped with a single-axis wrist and offers speeds up to 3,000 degrees per second. In this application, the FANUC M-1iA/0.5S picks springs conveyed from a mock CNC spring forming machine and places them on a cleat conveyor to simulate packaging. The robot's parallel-link structure provides higher speeds and accuracy compared to traditional handling robots. While the springs are being picked up, the robot uses a camera equipped with FANUC iRVision error proofing to inspect each spring's length on-the-fly before placing it on the cleat conveyor. A monitor displays what this camera is seeing. iRVision error proofing results in complete inspection of the part. After inspection, the robot reorients the spring by rotating it 90 degrees before placing it on the conveyor for packaging. This prevents the springs from getting tangled. The M-1iA robot can be easily mounted on existing equipment or machines, making it ideal for machines with output conveyors such as Spring Formers or CNC Lathes.
