FANUC M-3iA Food Packaging Robots Pack Bags of Frozen Food - Courtesy of Flexicell

Food manufacturers in search of a robotically automated food packaging system often prefer a system that incorporates parallel-link or "delta-style" robots, such as the robots seen in this video. The FANUC M-3iA/6S Robot is a four-axis robot ideal for food handling operations because of its high speed, accuracy, and ability to handle primary and packaged foods safely. All of these quality features are displayed by the system seen here.

Developed by FANUC Robotics Authorized Integrator, Flexicell Inc., this system includes two FANUC M-3iA/6S four-axis robots as they use conventional line tracking and FANUC Robotics' PickTool application software to locate bags of frozen fruit on a conveyor and case pack the bags. The PickTool software is programmed so that the first M-3iA robot picks every other bag, leaving alternating bags for the second robot to process. The first M-3iA robot also fills the lower half of the case, while the 2nd robot packs the precise count needed to fill the case. Each robot is equipped with single-part grippers with a tilting actuator.

FANUC Robotics Authorized Integrator, Flexicell, are experts in automated case packing systems for a variety of food and beverage products including cans, baked goods, bags or pouches -- such as the ones seen in this video -- and much more.

Key Technology Demonstrated

FANUC M-3iA Robot

Robotic Food Packing System
  • Available in a 4-axis or 6-axis designs.
  • iRVision and FANUC force control are supported on both models.
  • Unique parallel-link design maximizes speed and acceleration.
  • Higher speed and acceleration reduces number of robots needed for an application, condensing overall footprint of a manufacturing system.
  • Six-axis design (three-axis wrist) enables part feeding from the sides of a work zone, increasing the useable workspace.
  • Four-axis design (single-axis wrist) moves parts at extremely high speeds.
  • Food option with food-grade grease features a special coating to handle acid and alkaline disinfectants, and low-pressure rinsing.
  • Ability to work with primary (unpackaged) or secondary (packaged) food products.
